Umit Ozat collapses in Cologne victory

Cologne overcame the shock of seeing captain Umit Ozat collapse during the game to earn their first win of the Bundesliga season with a 2-0 victory at Karlsruhe on Friday.
Cologne captain Umit Ozat is stretchered off the pitch during the 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Karlsruhe.

The Turkish defender fell to the ground in the 27th minute and was taken to hospital for checks.

Ozat lost consciousness and medics treated him for several minutes on the field before taking him out on a stretcher.

Coach Christoph Daum and goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon were crying while the captain was being treated.

Cologne general manager Michael Meier said that Ozat was able to communicate shortly after the incident and that he was being examined at a local hospital. "I hope the situation is not as serious as it may have looked," Meier said.

It was later confirmed that the 31-year-old was being kept in hospital overnight for observation and Daum confirmed; "It does not look so dramatic now."

The game was interrupted for about five minutes and referee Florian Meyer consulted Cologne players before resuming play.

Coming back after the break, Milivoje Novakovic scored his third goal of the season in the 72nd and Sergiu Radu sealed Cologne's victory in the 84th minute.

No wonder why Fenerbahce did not look good in the Super League opening match!..

They had the CL in their minds!..

While Galatasaray lost out on the Europe's biggest tournamnet Fenerbahce surpases Last season Turkcell super league Champions to reach the CL.

That is bad news for Galatasaray fans but,it is good news for Fenerbahce fans, becasue, their team will be in the Champions League This season again.

Steaua Bucharest also upset Turkish giants Galatasaray as Banel Nicolita netted the only goal of the game to send the 1986 European Cup winners through, 3-2 on aggregate.

Rivals Fenerbahce also came into the second leg with the scores at 2-2, but they beat Partizan Belgrade 2-1 with Brazilian Alex de Souza's second goal proving crucial.

Guiza leads Fenerbahce to UCL win.....

Dani Guiza started the game with a mission: to be in charge of scoring every time he had a chance.

So, he made a soft kick at minute 3, easily saved by keeper Bozovic; at minute 12, he tried with a bicycle kick, but the ball went off target.

But he joined Semih Sentürk to create the playe before Fenerbahce's first goal: Guiza took the ball, sent a cross to Ugur Boral, who sent a longer cross in order for Sentürk to open the score.

In addition, Fenerbahce's defensive line seem to be more organized since Roberto Carlos returned to the team after an injury layoff; the counterattacks attempted by Lamine Diarra and Paunovic meant nothing to the Turkish team defenders.

In the second half, Guiza sent a cross to Alex to score the secong goal of the game. More than enough for the fans, who started chanting "Güiza, Güiza"; still, Zoran Tozic scored the goal for Partizan 15 minutes before the end of the game.

Turkey defeats Chile with one goal!: 1 - 0

Euro-2008 semi-finalists Turkey beat Chile 1-0 in a hard-fought match that will raise their spirits before they start their campaign next month for a berth in the 2010 World Cup.

Halil Altintop scored the winning goal in the 74th minute as the Turks finally organized themselves against the Chileans who stretched their rival's defence with fast attacks led by striker Humberto Souza.

The result was a sigh of relief for Turkey coach Fatih Terim who was facing his first real test after his team made it to its first European championship semifinal this summer in Austria and Switzerland.

Although hit by a recent spate of injuries, Turkey took the field with the backbone of the team that played in the Euro 2008, with Semih Senturk and captain Tuncay Sanli leading the strike force. . Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa named a four-four-two starting formation that took the upper hand in the early stages of the game and taxed the Turks with runs from Souza.

Still, the Turkish side had the best chance of the opening exchanges when Senturk sent a header wide of the left post. Within seconds, the Chileans hit back after striker Mark Gonzales, coming in from the left, forced keeper Volkan Demirel to make the first save of the game.

In the 35th and 36th minute, Senturk could have set up two goals with his passes to Sanli and midfielder Mehmet Aurelio, but both men sent the ball over the crossbar as they were face to face with Chile captain Claudio Bravo in the goal.

In the second half, the Chilean side proved a real danger for the Turks with Souza making several forays into the box, ratcheting up the pressure on Demirel.

In the 59th minute, the Monterrey striker slid into the penalty area from the left and moved past Demirel only to have his shot saved by defender Gokhan Zan. Minutes later, he aimed a header that was saved by Demirel.

But the Turks were the ones to celebrate in the 74th minute when Altintop, who replaced Senturk in the second half, came into the penalty area from the left and slid the ball past Bravo into the goal. . In the 79th minute, Souza almost equalized for Chile with a header that slid past Demirel, but, luckily for the Turks, was turned off the line by defender Ibrahim Kas.

Turkey are set to start their battle for a place in the World Cup in September with a clash against Armenia followed by one with Belgium. Chile are currently fourth in their South America zone qualifiers.

Appiah quits Fenerbahce !...

According to reports from Ghana, Stephen Appiah claims he has quit Fenerbahce after a fall-out with the club's management.

The 27-year-old midfielder has spent close to nine months on the sidelines due to a long-standing knee injury which forced him to miss the African Nations Cup in his home country earlier this year.

He has been linked with a move away from Turkey all summer and this latest twist could create plenty of interest in Appiah before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

'I am a free agent,' he told Accra radio station Happy FM at the weekend. 'A few issues happened between me and the club so I no longer play for them.'

FENERBAHCE HAS A BIG ADVANTAGE!.

Fenerbahce comeback stuns Partizan

Daniel Guiza Gonzales of Fenerbahce reacts after scoring a goal against Partizan Belgrade, during their Champions League third qualifying round first leg soccer match in Belgrade, Serbia, Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.(AP Photo/Srdjan Ilic)

In Belgrade, Partizan carved out a two-goal lead early on, only for a penalty on the stroke of half time and a goal straight after the interval to give Fenerbahce an advantage.

Fenerbahce seemed to be out for the count after the hosts took an early, two-goal lead, but a spirited comeback denied Partizan the advantage ahead of the second leg. Within eleven minutes the black-and-white side were 1-0 up.

A fine cross from Stevanovic found the well-traveled Velkjo Paunovic in the box, and the striker headed past Volkan Demirel without concern.

Three minutes later it was 2-0.This time Diarra was the architect as he punished some lax defending to put Bogunovic through to double the advantage.

Both sides had their chances after that, Gokhan coming close for the Yellow Canaries while Partizan almost made it three through the impressive Diarra, but eventually Fenerbahce established a rhythm.

Roberto Carlos, given plenty of space on the left, nearly set up Guiza for a comeback goal 34 minutes in, but in fact Luis Aragones didn't have long to wait to see his side's deficit halved.

Deep into injury time Alex was adjudged to have been brought down in the box, and the man himself stepped up to score from the spot.

Just five minutes after the break Lugano's killer ball found Güiza in the box and the Spaniard made it 2-2: suddenly it was game on again.

However chances were few and far between in the second period and as such the game ended in an entertaining draw.

Partizan: Bozovic, Stevanovic, Knezevic, Djordjevic, Sikimic, Obradovic, Petrovic (Maletic 72), Lazic (Cadikovski 88), Bogunovic (Marinkovic 78), Paunovic, Diarra Lamina.

Fenerbahce: Volkan Demirel, Ugur Boral (Maldonado 84), Gokhan Gonul, Lugano, Roberto Carlos, Alex, Edu, Selcuk Sahin, Semih Senturk (Emre Belozoglu 61), Guiza, Kazim Kazim (Burak 55).

BAD START FOR GALATASARAY!.......

NONDA SAVES GALATASARAY IN ISTANBUL

Galatasaray cameback from two goals down to salvage a home draw with FC Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Galatasaray drew 2-2 with Steaua Bucharest of Romania in the first leg match of the European Champions League third qualifying round played in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Steaua looked on course to take a lead back to Romania in a fortnight when Dairo Moreno and Banel Nicolita struck in a first 12 minutes.

Galatasaray's Shabani Nonda quickly pulled one back, however, and his second goal just after half-time ensured there will be all to play for in Bucharest.

The home side were deprived the services of Harry Kewell, Tobias Linderoth and Umit Karan through injury and were behind in the fourth minute.

Aykut's goal kick fell to Moreno and the Colombian entered the box and calmly beat the keeper.

Eight minutes later a Steaua throw-in was picked up by Nicolita five metres from goal and his powerful shot doubled the lead.

Despite those setbacks the 20,000 home fans continued to support their team and were given hope on 18 minutes when Nonda struck from close range.

An equaliser nearly arrived not long before the break when Arda Turan found Nonda but Robinson Zapata made a fine reflex save.

Two minutes into the second half an Arda cross from the left was headed in by the Congolese striker.

Now the pressure was on Steaua to hold out and they did so with some comfort despite the introduction of Barıs Ozbek and Sabri Sarıoglu.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, will hope the return of injured players in a fortnight inspires them to the group stage.

French first division club Paris St Germain have agreed terms with Fenerbahce over a loan deal for Serbian star Mateja Kezman, a source close to the French club said on Thursday, though the Turkish club has denied it.

Kezman spent four years at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, joining Premier League side Chelsea in 2004.

However a club statement from Fenerbahce later said: “Our club, concerning negotiations with Paris Saint Germain, has presented an offer which has still not had a reply. Information confirming that an agreement has been found (…) is wrong.”

Werder Bremen have agreed to sell Alparslan Erdem to Galatasaray for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old defender has come through the youth ranks and their director of football Klaus Allofs admitted his regret at seeing him go.

"It is an interesting challenge for Alparslan Erdem because Galatasaray have in mind a good role for him in their team," he said.

"Nevertheless, it is a real shame because he was on the fringes of our team and would have had chances.

"The fact is, we have a strong competition for places at left full-back and there are lots of young players coming through.

"Galatasaray's offer was attractive for everybody and was lucrative for us."

Erdem never quite made the breakthrough at Bremen, the club he joined as a 14-year-old.

He leaves with a few regrets, and expressed optimism about his new challenge.

"I have had a good time here and felt very happy, but I think I have better prospects at Galatasaray," he said.

"A large part of my family lives in Turkey so I will feel at home very quickly."

Erdem played a total of 38 games for Bremen's reserve team and made his debut for the Turkey Under-21s a year ago, going on to earn six caps at that level.
